But what exactly is a rhetorical analysis. A rhetorical analysis is the process of breaking down a form of text and critiquing the key parts. There are three main factors that should be pointed out during a rhetorical analysis. The first is the author's purpose. You should be able to tell whether the author is trying to inform the reader, persuade, or to entertain. The next thing you should look for the author's stance or point of view of the text he or she has wrote. The last key element of a rhetorical analysis is the audience. You must ask who the intended audience for the author's writing is. With that being said I chose to do my rhetorical analysis on the article named Game That Critiques Apple Vanishes From App Store by Jenna Wortham.
The purpose of this article is to inform readers of the intellectual aspects of the app Phone Story and why Apple banned it. The app displayed what it takes to create and distribute mobile devices like the popular iPhone. The game shows the use of slave labor for the mining of metals in Africa to make the iPhones. Also the manufacturing factories in China are represented in the game as well. Both of these depictions show the cruel and unseen side of the distribution of iPhones. The designer of the app Mr. Paolo Pedercini wanted to use the game to talk about issues of consumerism. He said "The story was meant to generate some discussion about hardware and our socioeconomic impact as consumers of electronics." Mr. Pedercini's intended to donate all funds from the game to organizations dedicated to protecting labor rights to stop situations portrayed in the game. Apple banned the app because it violated developer guidelines. The guidelines say that an application cannot depict crude and objectionable content, or the abuse of children. Also apps cannot be used for raising funds. Pedercini believes that his app relates to real life situations and does not believe it is that terrible to buyers. He responds to the banning with this. "There's much worse stuff on the Internet and the App store."
The author of this article Jenna Wortham is a technology reporter for The New York Times. With that being said, she is more likely to be bias towards technology based articles. Also, that means she understands how iPhones and apps work. Judging by the way she wrote this article I can tell she is typically neutral about the issue. She presents both sides of the matter at hand. First she explains Mr. Paolo Pedercini purpose for creating the app Phone Story. Then she clarifies the reasons why Apple banded the app. To conclude the article she uses a quote
